Tony was born and grew up in Brooklyn, NY during the Great Depression and World War II. Tony’s parents, Joseph and Lucy, taught him a strong faith in God, instilled in him the importance of a good education, and demonstrated a love for their fellow human beings and their families. His fondest memories of his childhood included visiting nearby grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Tony served proudly in the US Army in Korea. After his military service, he began his 39 year career with AT&T.
He met the love of his life, Marge, while they both worked for AT&T in New York. Married for 52 wonderful years, they were known among family and friends as the first couple on any dance floor, and the last ones to leave it. They brought up their children, Joe and Diane, in Mendham, NJ, where they lived for 25 years. Tony considered raising two great children and putting them through college one of his greatest achievements in life.
For the past 25 years Tony and Marge enjoyed life in Williamsburg, VA where they were active in the communities of Greenspring West and St. Bede’s parish. He spent his final two years as a favorite neighbor at Virginia Greens Retirement Community. Throughout his life he was known for his warm and welcoming smile, his unyielding determination and perseverance, his deep Catholic faith, his insatiable curiosity, and his good humor.
His role as Grandpa to Christopher, Caroline, Jack, Michael and William Marotta, and Daniel and Andrew Walker, filled his life with joy. His grandchildren knew if Grandpa couldn’t fix whatever was broken, no one could fix it. He was always delighted and proud to hear of their activities and accomplishments, and to watch them play and explore.
He leaves behind a family who will miss him tremendously: his wife, Marge; his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Allen Walker; his daughter-in-law, Katie Marotta, along with her parents, Ken and Debbie Powell; his seven grandchildren; his sister, Charlotte Ross; brothers and sisters-in-law Micky and Cathie Brady, Barbara and John Manning, Jerry McStravick, and Tina Marotta; and many loving nephews and nieces. He is now reunited with his son, Joe; his sister, Lucy; his brother, Leonard; his parents; and many other cherished family members who preceded him in death.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Tony’s honor to Williamsburg House of Mercy or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Details for celebrating Tony’s incredible life will be shared by the family once finalized.
