She was the only child of Rich and Louise Richardson and was born on July 29, 1926 in Richmond, Virginia where she grew up. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and Converse College. She and George were married on March 25, 1950 after which they embarked on cross-country adventures to the various duty stations that Dr. Oliver's Air Force medical career took them: New Britain, CT; Spokane, WA; and Oklahoma City, OK.
In 1958, the Olivers settled in Williamsburg where she volunteered at Williamsburg Community Hospital and at her children's schools. Barbara was an enthusiastic runner, tennis player, and tennis fan - she regularly volunteered with the Wightman Cup, which was held for many years in Williamsburg. She was also an avid gardener and lover of flowers and was active in the Williamsburg Garden Club for many years. She was a loyal friend to many and cherished her tennis buddies and the monthly “Lunch Bunch” gatherings. Above all, however, she was devoted to her husband and to her family.
Barbara will be deeply missed by her family. She is survived by her three children: Jeff (Penny) Oliver of Lafayette, CO; Lou (Tom) Brooks of Spring Lake, NC; Dougie (Jim) Winthrop of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren: Katie (Jason) Brooks Webster, Elizabeth Winthrop, Jonathan (Taylor) Oliver, Alex (Bruce) Brooks Hammill, Jack (Jenna) Winthrop, Tyler Oliver, and Jane Winthrop; and three great-grandchildren: Braxton Webster, Olivia Hammill, and Lucas Webster.
Services will be held on Saturday, June 3 at 2:00PM at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. There will be no visitation and interment will be private. The Nelsen Funeral Home of Williamsburg is handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Mrs. Oliver may be made to the William and Mary Athletic Educational Foundation at www.tribeathletics.com or to a charity of one's choice.
Finally, the family is grateful to the nurses, physicians, and staff of Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center for the exceptional care they provided Mrs. Oliver over the past several years, as well as to the staff at Patriots Colony and to her dear personal caregivers: Kim, Rita, Angie, and Cindy.
