Douglas, Clarence Edward, of Norge, Va., passed away peacefully on Monday, February 28, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence E. Douglas and Ruby Cochran Lewis; brother, Donald L. Douglas, and wife Sharon S. Douglas.
Doug, as his friends fondly knew him, was born in Newport News and grew up in Williamsburg, Va. As a youth, he spent much of his time roaming Colonial Williamsburg, delivering papers, and hanging out at the Douglas Bakery on Duke of Gloucester St. He graduated from James Blair High School and went on to play basketball and football at Chowan College in North Carolina. In 1959, while living in California, Doug married his third grade sweetheart, Sharon. They returned to Williamsburg and built their home on a beautiful twelve acre farm, raising their four sons, Scott (Janet), Mark (Susan), David (Kathy), and Todd (Lisa) Douglas. His beloved Sharon “Shasha” passed away November 16, 2018 shortly after their 59th wedding anniversary.
Doug’s love for and dedication to his country was apparent throughout his career, which included serving as Lead Advance for President Ronald Reagan and Deputy Director of Operations for the 1983 G-7 Summit of Industrialized Nations in Williamsburg. Douglas retired in 2020 after serving 40 years as an Executive Director and lobbyist for the Virginia Legislature.
Doug had a passion for genealogy and antique long rifles. He was a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Kentucky Rifle Association. More than anything, he loved being around family at his house on the York River and his hunting shack in Charles City County.
Despite his stellar career, Doug’s love and devotion to his family will be his legacy. In addition to his sons and daughter in laws, he is survived by his sister, Geraldine Boone, multiple nieces and nephews, as well as his 10 grandchildren: Sarah Bradley (Ryan), Maddy, Craig, Gracie, Hannah, Makenzie, Lara Ann, Hayden, Palmer and Dana.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2022 from 5-7:00pm at Nelsen Funeral Home, Williamsburg. A private graveside service will be held at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
