Gene Harvell, born September 12, 1954, passed away on November 13, 2025, at the age of 71. He was born in Suffolk, Virginia to Clifford and Marjorie Joyner Harvell. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Mary Horton Harvell, the couple moved to Williamsburg in 1978.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Mary, and his devoted children Jarratt Harvell (Samantha) of Mechanicsville, Virginia and daughter Sarah Giraldi (Tom) of Annapolis, Maryland. He was the proud and adored "PawPaw" to five grandchildren, Wyatt and Elliot Harvell and Everett, Hudson, and Mabel Giraldi.
It was often said that Gene never met a stranger or a dog he didn't like. He possessed a rare gift for connection, making every acquaintance feel like an old friend. This loving nature extended to the furry companions he cared for; he cherished all the people he met through his successful dog sitting business with his wife, Mary.
Family was the centerpiece of Gene’s life. He found immense joy in traveling to sports games to watch his children and grandchildren compete, serving as their most enthusiastic and vocal supporter from the stands and even sometimes driving the team bus. Cherished memories were made during their many family vacations including his favorite, the Outer Banks.
Gene will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched with his kind heart and humor. Per his wishes and aligned with the simple man he was, there will not be a formal service. His immediate family will gather in the Outer Banks in December to celebrate his life and spread his ashes.
He would joke that he read the obituaries to see if he had to go to work that day. Rest easy and enjoy your day off, PawPaw.
