Gloria Lang passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017. She was born on January 5, 1929, in New York City. Her family moved to Astoria, Long Island, in her early teens and lived there until she entered college at the State University of New York at Fredonia, to become a teacher. At Fredonia, she met Fred, which began a love affair for their long marriage. Gloria taught school in East Hampton, New York; Lansing, Michigan; Kenmore, New York; and completed her teaching career in Huntington, New York. Gloria taught fourth, fifth and sixth grade and especially enjoyed teaching gifted students in her final teaching years. In addition to being a great teacher, her influence on her students was deep and long lasting. She was a master quilter, and received first prize and best in show for the last four quilts she entered in various fairs on Long Island and James City County. Her talents extended into painting, needlework, jewelry making, decorating and cooking. On Long Island, Gloria was active in the Old First Presbyterian Church in Huntington. She was an elder and a deacon, and served on many committees. After retirement, Gloria and Fred spent many winters in Naples, Florida where they were docents in The Conservancy, a natural history museum. They then moved to Williamsburg, where Gloria volunteered at the “May I Help You Desk” at the Visitors Center for 22 years. Gloria is survived by her husband of 64 years, Fred; her son Stephen, his wife Patricia; and grandsons Tyler and Andrew, of Poquoson. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Respite Center of Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23185. Family will receive friends at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA on Wednesday, September 27th, between 6 and 8 PM. A memorial service will be held at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Rd., Williamsburg, VA, 23185 on September 29th at 10am. Burial to be private.
