He was preceded in death by his loving parents, James Magill and Helen Froberger Magill, and his brother, Richard James Magill. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Shirley Phillips Magill; his nieces, Amy Gonzales and Karen McLaurin; and his nephews, Richard Magill and Michael Magill.
James graduated from Boston College with a degree in economics. He made his career serving in both the U.S. Army and Navy, followed by employment in the National Security Agency and Department of Energy. He then retired to Williamsburg, VA, and spent his next 20+ years doing what he loved most – passionately working and volunteering at Colonial Williamsburg’s Apothecary Shop as well as Historic Jamestowne.
Due to declining health, he moved to Charleston, SC in 2018 to be close to family, but his heart was always in Williamsburg. He was an active parishioner at St. Bede Catholic Church and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, serving Council 6828 as financial secretary for many years.
James was an avid collector of books, trains, model cars, coins, canes, teddy bears, just to name a few. He led a very productive life, serving his country, his community, and his Church, as well as following his great many personal interests.
A funeral Mass was held in Charleston, SC. An interment ceremony will take place at St. Bede Catholic Church in Williamsburg, on February 20, 2025 at 2:00 pm. The public is invited to attend.
In remembrance of James, his family asks that any charitable donations be made to Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 1590, Merrifield, VA 22116. Please include the family's email address for notification: [email protected].
