Louis Jay Buttner III, age 81, of Williamsburg, Virginia passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2024. Jay, as he was best known, was born in East Chicago, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roma Lee Buttner.
As a hardworking self-starter, Jay worked for a furniture store then started his own family business. Although he worked several other careers, Jay had always been drawn to trucking, due to his interest in travel and exploring. He later made that a dream a reality, working for Gwaltney as a truck driver. He was very active in his community, especially as a member of Carsley United Methodist Church, where he taught Adult Bible study. Jay was also a Boy Scout leader for many years.
He is survived by his sons, Louis Buttner IV and Michael Rome Buttner (Andrew Burns); daughters, Lynne Mettler (Doug Mettler) and Jessica Sherry (Joe Sherry); grandchildren, Max Eanes, Hannah Buttner, Ava Buttner-Eanes, Ethan Sherry, Abby Sherry, Will Berry, Becky Berry, Chris Mettler, and Cameron Mettler; great-grandchildren, Julie Cruz, Sean Berry, Calvin Berry, Mason Berry, Ashlyn Eanes, Reid Mettler, and Tate Mettler; and his brother, Father Michael Buttner. Jay was also a foster father to Brian and Jason Seymour, whom he loved dearly.
A funeral service for Jay will be held Sunday, May 19, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Virginia 23188. A graveside burial will occur Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 12:00 PM at Wayne Memorial Park, 2925 US-117, Dudley, North Carolina 28333.
