Lucy Davis Gunn, age 99, died peacefully at home on January 12, 2022. Born in Sweet Briar, Virginia, she was the second of six children, and lived in Lynchburg until entering Farmville State Teachers College, now Longwood University. After graduating in 1943, she taught elementary school in Richmond, where she met her husband, Richard Gunn. In 1962, they moved with their three children to Williamsburg to own and operate The Toymaker of Williamsburg. While raising her family, Lucy was also a vibrant, consistent presence in the business. At age 60, she became a Realtor at GSH Realty, work that she continued until age 83. She especially enjoyed finding the perfect home for first-time buyers. She was a past president of the Salvation Army board, a 50-year member of The Williamsburg Garden Club, a docent at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, a Colonial Williamsburg walking tour guide, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a faithful member of Bruton Parish Church.
Lucy was a survivor of childhood polio, which shaped a life guided by determination, compassion, and faith. She was tenaciously optimistic and bluntly honest. A natural connector, she had a knack for spotting common interests and linking people together. A lifelong learner, she traveled internationally, read non-fiction voraciously, and took painting classes into her nineties. A cultivator of friendships, she faithfully kept in touch with friends near and far. A gracious hostess, she filled her home with fresh flowers, a welcoming spirit, and a sparkling smile. She loved her children deeply, unconditionally, and above all else.
Some advice from Lucy:
Recite poetry, especially to your grandchildren. Visit an elderly friend weekly. Set a pretty table, and use cloth napkins. Always write a thank you note, and never begin with "I." Be stubborn. Fill your bird feeder, but only when it's cold. Pick your charities wisely, and give generously. Keep trying to figure out the computer. Laugh at dirty jokes. Keep your elbows off the table. Look your fear in the eye. Have a place for everything and keep everything in its place. Plant daffodils; they will greet you each spring. Read the Bible every day. Keep an herb garden, because the fairies will come.
Lucy is survived by her children, Sarah Otey Gunn, James Randolph Gunn and wife Nancy, Sue Gunn Spooner and husband Art; her grandchildren, Lucy Clare Spooner, Emelie Barker Gunn, and Richard Randolph Gunn; her sister, Virginia Clare Wallace and husband Irving; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Lucy's many devoted caregivers, particularly Earlean Brown, Gerona Neubia, Pamela Shepard, and Jamie Washington, whose compassion and love kept her comfortable and safe.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Longwood University or to the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be shared at www.nelsenwilliamsburg.com.
