Peggy Was born on January 15, 1945 to Margaret and Edmund Crossley in Newburgh, NY, and lived primarily with her grandparents, Charles and Mary, for much of her childhood. After graduating from Mount Saint Mary Academy in 1962, she studied at Boston University. Returning to NY, on September 9, 1967 she married Glenn R. Whitney, with whom she had one daughter, Margaret "Little Peggy" Whitney.
Despite standing at a diminutive 4'11", Peggy was a gregarious and energetic woman who laughed easily and made friends everywhere she went. Sharp as a tack to the very end, she was a voracious reader and avid Jeopardy! fan, even competing on the show in the 1970s. In her later years, she developed a fondness for jigsaw puzzles.
She was a devoted mother, staying home to raise Little Peggy and ensure she knew she would always be supported. With the same generous heart, she was a loving pet parent and donated often to animal rescue organizations, as well as St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Glenn; her parents, Margaret and Edmund; her aunt, Mary; and uncle, John Simpson, and her uncle, Joseph LaPage. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Whitney, and cat Tuffy.
A memorial will be held early next year in New York, with details to be shared with friends and family. In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations be made to the ASPCA (www.aspca.org/ways-to-give) or local animal rescue.
