Robert Earl Monroe, 75, of Williamsburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family and friends, with a joyful timbre of special hymns sung by those he loved as he entered the gates of Heaven to be with our Lord and Savior.
Robert embodied a steadfast pursuit of education, proudly holding a Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, and Master of Science in Human Resources Management. It is this passion that Robert bestowed on his daughters whom he continuously encouraged to become life-long learners.
With even greater zeal, Robert exemplified the highest form of patriotism, serving his country in the Vietnam War and passionately serving in the army for 30 years, ultimately attaining the esteemed rank of Sergeant Major. Words cannot fully reflect the pride and love Robert had for his country. Knowing the struggles veterans endure, Robert devoted himself to supporting and advocating for veterans in his local DAV chapter.
Even so, it is Robert’s life-long dedication to the Lord that truly marked his identity as a child of God, uplifting and strengthening those around him each day through his inspiring faith. He was a man after God’s heart, believing deeply in the power of serving, certain that his highest call was to feed God’s sheep—that our highest call is to feed His sheep. An integral member of Jamestown Presbyterian Church, Robert faithfully served as a worship elder, tenor of the choir, VBS storyteller, and on a few occasions preached heartfelt sermons! Robert could be seen regularly singing his heart out to his favorite hymns, with a country twang and a signature sway that many came to know so well. Rarely was there a dry eye during his solos. Robert passed on this gift of service, encouraging his daughters to glorify the Lord with their singing in church.
Robert was a simple man: as long as he was alongside family, he was happy. Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Tijen; his daughters Neslihan, Melissa, Selin, Pelin, and Remona; sons Robert Jr. and Cleveland; son-in-law Zachary; his granddaughters Ayla and Meryem whom he taught the love of gardening; and his siblings: John, Pat, Liz, Charlene, Curtis, Ron, and Mikell. He was preceded in death by his cherished sister, Mae; father, John; mother, Henrietta; and his dog Max.
Visitation will be held on May 21st from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Nelsen Williamsburg Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place on May 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at Jamestown Presbyterian Church, followed by a burial with military honors at noon at Williamsburg Memorial Park.
Farewell Robert, we rejoice in the promise that we will see you again in paradise. It is with great honor that we say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).
