Obituary of Ronald "Moon" Frederick Moreau

IN THE CARE OF

Nelsen Williamsburg

Ronald F. Moreau passed away on January 21, 2022, at the age of 87 with his loving wife and daughters at his side. He was born on May 21, 1934, in Orange, New Jersey. While attending Upsala College in New Jersey, he joined the Reserve Officer Candidate (ROC) program, and upon graduation in 1957, was commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve. He commenced flight training at Pensacola, Florida, in June 1957, and received his wings in November 1958. Ron (Moon) had a distinguished 24-year career in the Navy flying, primarily, A-4’s and A-7’s. Most notably, he flew over 200 combat missions during two successive cruises to Southeast Asia aboard the Intrepid; served as commanding officer of VA-105; and was Commander Carrier Air Wing Eight aboard the USS Nimitz. When he retired from the Navy in November 1981, he had 4,200 flight hours and 940 carrier landings. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Individual Air Medals, 18 Strike/Flight Air Medals, three Navy Commendation Medals with combat “V,” and two Navy Achievement Medals with combat “V.” Following his retirement from the Navy, Moon worked briefly as a Program Manager for Syscon Corporation before beginning his relationship with Software Solutions (later becoming Acton Burnell Corporation), where he became Executive Vice President and a member of the board of directors. During both the Navy and Moon’s second career, he loved to have fun. Squadron parties and pranks on friends were commonplace. He worked hard, but he knew how to have fun too. After retirement from the Navy, he and his wife, Marcie, lived in a neighborhood that was somewhat unique to Northern Virginia in that the neighbors were extremely close and active. They had annual car rallies, croquet tournaments, New Year’s Eve parties, group birthday celebrations, water balloon fights, and pranks – lots of pranks. It was during this period that he built a car! After his second retirement in October 1996, Moon and Marcie, moved from Northern Virginia to Governor’s Land in Williamsburg, where they built not only a home but long-lasting, loving friendships. Here he continued his enthusiasm for automobiles by buying a 1931 Ford Model “A,” and joining the local Model “A” Club; he began his love-hate relationship with the game of golf; he served on the Two Rivers Country Club Board of Directors; he chaired a charity golf tournament which garnered over $60,000 for breast cancer research; he joined the Colonial Capital Kiwanis Club that he felt provided a wonderful service to the community; he traveled with friends; and, he and Marcie hosted and attended more parties than one can remember. In 2013, Moon and Marcie moved to another lovely community, Ford’s Colony. One of Moon’s proudest moments came in 2017 when he was inducted into The Early and Pioneer Naval Aviators Association, better known as “The Golden Eagles,” which functions as a living memorial to those early Naval aviators who pioneered and provided leadership for the development of the Navy’s unique military aviation force. Selection of members for this limited and prestigious group is based on their outstanding skills as a pilot, their wide experience, good judgment, personal character, and dedication to flying. He felt honored even to be considered for membership. He was a kind, caring, polite, humble, unassuming man who loved his family, his friends, and his country. He lived life to the fullest until dementia robbed him of so much in the final years of his life. Moon is survived by his wife of 39 years, Marcie Moreau; daughters, Molly Almond (Billy) and Nancy Oliver; and grandchildren, Drew Oliver and Morgan Oliver. A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg.
