

Dr. Sue Young ended her earthly journey on April 26, 2018 in Williamsburg. She leaves behind her sister, Cathy Waltrip of Williamsburg; son, Chris Young, his wife Michelle and their son, Layden of Savannah, GA.; stepdaughter, Meg Young and her son, Daniel of Tallahassee, FL.; brother, David Waltrip and his wife, Robyn of Virginia Beach; and her cousin, Kay McCrary of Birmingham, AL.
Sue was born in Miami, FL to the late George and Frankie Waltrip in 1944. The family lived in various locations during her early life as Sue’s dad was in the Navy and was transferred frequently.
Through the years, Sue was a college professor, Dean of Nursing, Grant Writer, Program Director in Nursing Administration, and assistant dean for Graduate Studies. She was in over 25 publications in peer reviewed professional journals and she served on the U.S.S. Hope Ship in Brazil for a year. However, Sue’s most precious and endearing title was “Grandma”.
After retiring from a successful career in nursing, Sue continued trying to help people through her volunteer work. Her passion was working with Avalon and became a Shelter Advocate and other groups who focused on helping women who had psychological distressed experiences with domestic violence and sexual abuse.
Sue was a very active member of Walnut Hills Baptist Church and was a past deacon. She worked with the woman’s mission council helping in whatever caring ways she could.
A service will be help Tuesday, May 1st at 11am at the Walnut Hills Baptist Church, 1014 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg. An inurnment will follow the service at Cedar Grove Cemetery, 809 S. Henry Street, Williamsburg. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Walnut Hills Baptist Church.
