He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and EW “Bill” Sargent of Leavenworth; and brother, Richard Sargent.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn, originally from Easton, formerly "Candy" Winkler; sons, Craig (Tammy) of Texas, and Kyle and grandson, Rhett of Virginia; sister, Kitty Fapp; and brothers, Chris and Don Sargent.
Tom graduated from Leavenworth High, attended Emporia State and Kansas University, and was a graduate of Career Academy of Broadcasting Wisconsin. He entered the Air Force and was stationed at the Hometown News Center in Oklahoma, he then served in Udom, Thailand during the Vietnam war.
During a break in service, Tom worked for the Leavenworth, Kansas police and fire departments as well as the Federal prison system before returning to the Air Force as a Radio/TV Specialist. He then served in Crete, Greece, Washington, DC, Madrid, Spain, and retired at Shepherd AFB, Texas. He received many AF medals and awards, and degrees from Wayland Baptist College and North Texas University. He then became a federal prison vocational teacher in Florida and Tennessee. Tom's next career move was to Washington DC as a radio production specialist job with the Voice of America. Tom retired again and settled in Williamsburg, VA.
He enjoyed driving a tram at Busch Gardens to provide passes for family and friends. As a member of King of Glory Lutheran Church, he used his production skills to volunteer, and train youth to record Sunday services on DVDs for shut-ins. This has evolved to multi-media Live church services and Bible study. He was also the Visual Leader for the Building More Room campaign.
Throughout his life, he coached youth baseball and soccer teams, did play-by-play sports for local radio stations and continued to be a big fan of Kansas teams: Chiefs, Jayhawks and Royals.
Due to Covid restrictions, the family will plan a service at a later date.
