Virginia “Ginny” Hendry Galbraith, 79, passed away at Sentara Regional Medical Center in Williamsburg, Virginia on Thursday, September 25, 2014. Born in Mount Kisco, New York on September 11, 1935, and raised in nearby Armonk, NY, Ginny was the daughter of Lucy Howard Hendry and Arthur Ekman Hendry. She graduated from Plattsburgh State Teachers College in Plattsburgh, New York in 1957.
She is survived by her husband, William Galbraith; daughters, Laurie Weckstein and Lisa Galbraith; son, David Galbraith; five grandchildren, Andrew Weckstein, Timothy Weckstein, Liam Beckman, Camryn Galbraith, and Spencer Galbraith; and sisters, Mildred Salmassy and Joanna Sanderson.
Ginny was a resident of Williamsburg, Virginia for the past 13 years, but spent her life, after a brief teaching career on Long Island, living in a variety of military locations in faithful support of her husband’s military career. Her sunny disposition and natural leadership abilities were appreciated everywhere she went. Later in life her love of history led her to become a docent and guide at Gunston Hall in northern Virginia. Ginny loved socializing with friends and neighbors, and could always be counted on to remember birthdays and other special events. She was kind, gentle and dearly loved by her friends and family. Her smile could light up a room.
Ginny died from a dreadful disease that took her life but never blunted her spirit, her optimism, or her ability to care deeply for others. Her strength, courage and uncomplaining nature served as an inspiration to all who knew her. Her oft quoted credo that “everyone needs someone to love, something to do, and something to look forward to” will sustain us as we begin the privilege of carrying on her legacy.
Friends and family will gather on Thursday, October 2 from 2-3:30 pm, followed by a memorial service at 3:30pm, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Virginia. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Online condolences may be offered at www.nelsencares.com.
