The Honorable Walter S. Felton Jr. passed to eternal life on April 29, 2022, at the age of 77. He was born in Suffolk, VA, and was a resident of Williamsburg, VA. Walter was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Humble beginnings taught him the importance of hard work and perseverance, especially when faced with hardships; his many achievements in life reflected that. He was a graduate of the University of Richmond and University of Richmond’s T.C. Williams School of Law, and proudly served in the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAGC). Walter had a long and distinguished career in the field of law, beginning in private practice, then serving as faculty of William & Mary’s Marshall-Wythe School of Law, Deputy Attorney General, Senior Counsel to the Attorney General, and Counsel to Governor James S. Gilmore, III & Director of Policy. He was elected to the Virginia Court of Appeals in 2002 and served for 12 years, the last 8 as Chief Judge. Following his retirement from the Court he joined The McCammon Group to provide mediation and other dispute resolution services. Walter was an avid sports fan, enjoyed golf, float and pond fishing, nature, and generously supported numerous organizations and charities. He was admired by many because of his determined work ethic, humility, kindness, and compassion. His warm smile and laugh were always welcoming and will be greatly missed. Walter was preceded in death by his parents Walter Shepard and Myrtle Vann Felton. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Kay Felton; his sister Myrtle Etheridge; his sons Walter “Shep” Felton and Joe Felton (Katie); stepdaughters Kristin Bishop (Doug) and Cassie Becker (Xavier); and grandchildren Andrew and Charlie Felton, Nate and Mabry Bishop, and Rylan and Birkett Becker. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on May 19, 2022, at Williamsburg Community Chapel, 3899 John Tyler Highway.
