Maryellen was the loving wife of Robert D. Geyer of 62 years; beloved mother of Kim E. Geyer (Karin) and Valerie S. Geyer; cherished grandmother of Jason, Michael, and Rachel (Michael) Schmidt; great grandmother of Jonas Schmidt; dear sister of Floramay I. Sabin (Robert), Richard A. Wickham (Lynn), the late Stanley E. Wickham (Nancy), George H. Wickham (Joyce), Velma June Maurer (James), Patsy L. Sparkia (Kent) and James E. Wickham; sister-in-law to Russell M. Geyer, Joyce C. Vaughn and the late Charles “Wayne” Geyer; fond aunt to many nieces and nephews; cousin to many; and special lifelong friend to Orleta and Eugene Shaulis and their entire family.
Maryellen was a 1951 graduate of Williamston High School and a 1953 graduate of Lansing Business University. Maryellen possessed excellent secretarial skills and was a very fast typist, this kept her in high demand at MSU through Office Services. She held various secretarial positions in Lansing before settling in at Michigan State University in 1971. She provided support in many departments on campus, to Deans and Chairpersons, before spending the majority of her career in the MSU School of Criminal Justice. She retired from MSU and the School in June of 1995.
Maryellen moved to Williamston, MI with her parents when she was six weeks old. She was a lifelong resident of Williamston. She grew up in town but when she married Robert she moved to a new house just north of town. She would drive on Sherwood Road when she was young and think she would really like to live on this road, never expecting it would come true some day. Maryellen spent the last four years of her life in Okemos, MI at the Ingham County Medical Care Facility.
Maryellen enjoyed traveling, reading, flower gardening (especially in her rose garden), playing the piano and singing, going to musical performances, home decorating and doing crossword puzzles. She was a Christ Follower from a very young age and was baptized in 1952. As a member of the First Baptist Church of Williamston for over 50 years, she was a deaconess, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and was a Pioneer Girls and AWANA Club leader.
Maryellen was a loving, caring and devoted wife and mother, grandmother, daughter and sister to her entire family. She always put her family first above her own needs and wants. She always made sure Bob had chicken, potato salad and a rhubarb pie for his birthday; and her children always had a decorated birthday cake on their birthday. She golfed in a Mother-Son tournament with Kim, traveled with him, and encouraged him in his passion for guitar. She sewed clothes for her family and made many doll clothes for Valerie. She encouraged Valerie in her piano lessons and taught her to cook and bake. She attended every WHS football game to watch her kids march in the band. She enjoyed many trips with her family across the country and a special trip to Ireland with aunts and cousins. She enjoyed many shopping trips with friends and family but was always more of a browser than a buyer. She will be missed!
The family would like to thank all the wonder staff and caregivers at the Ingham County Medical Care Facility “Dobie Road” that have cared for her lovingly and allowed her to bless them over the last four years. Thank you to The McLaren Hospice of Lansing team that have supported her and the family over the last year.
A visitation will be held Monday, August 15 from 1:00pm until the time of the funeral service at 2:00pm at First Baptist Church 3185 N Williamston Rd Williamston, MI 48895. Interment to follow at Summit Cemetery.
