Luz Reyes Carangal’s “change of address” took effect when she passed away on May 15, peacefully transitioning at her home in Scarborough, Canada. She was 92.
Born on April 15, 1929 to Apolinario and Esmaela Carangal in Taal, Batangas, Luz was the fourth of nine children. She was a graduate of the University of Sto. Tomas with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. She opened and operated her own drugstore, Carangal’s Pharmacy, and soda fountain in College, Laguna across her family’s general merchandise and grocery. Luz moved to the United States in the late ‘50s and began her career as a Medical Technologist at St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain, Ohio. She then moved to Ontario, Canada and joined North York General Hospital where she was the first Filipina on staff. Over three decades, she led a Laboratory team and trained the hospital program’s students. A lover of animals, her long-time pets included Arnold the Parakeet, and Sam and Beau the Persian cats. She cheered for the Blue Jays, enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and Sudoku, and listened to The Tijuana Brass.
“Sanse” to her siblings, she was preceded in death by sisters Amparo dela Rosa and Reynalda Ramos, brothers Apolinario Jr. and Virgilio, and nephew Mario dela Rosa. She is survived by siblings Florentina Gutierrez, Rosalia, Luzviminda Santos, and Teodoro(Rita). “Tita Luz” to everyone, she will be especially missed and remembered with much love by her remaining 21 nephews and nieces who shall share their Tita Luz memories with the 41 grand and 13 great grand nephews and nieces.
Viewing and memorial service will be held at the Perna, Dengler, Roberts Funeral Home in Williamsville, New York on Saturday, June 5th starting at 9:15AM. Interment will follow at 11:00AM at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lockport.
