so sorry for the loss of Bob, I saw him daily at the wood shop when he was making his dining room table and I was glad to call him my friend.. I just heard about his passing.  My condolences to the family . Patrick McNaney

Bob was an esteemed member of our woodshop club, an informal group of likeminded enthusiasts for creating our own stuff. We all brought diverse backgrounds into the fold but somehow our life stories had us all trying to figure the meaning over the same table saw. Bob was a very good friend to have around if you had the disposition of a beginner student, no matter what your credentials. I think Bob gravitated to design and experimenting with tools and the maker people and questions of technique, because he studied so much philosophy. He was never interested in the territory of a thought or defending a world view. He preferred being unsure, because this is where so much intellect blooms and where life gets interesting, and I suspect he chose his friends accordingly. He admired anyone who might find their way by means of a little courage, paying attention to their senses, and then sharing a genuine and private conviction about what was good or amazing. He complained that his own knowledge could be drowning. Clearly he had a deep sense of humor, and we laughed, but he had a dead serious heart. I heard his musical artistic spirit articulated the other day when I was listening to some archival interview footage of Jasper Johns. It was a defense of the complexity of a material process [using instruments] and the mystery in the works he dedicated himself to. [The things that interested me … and thinking and all, are the things that can’t be located, or are the things that turn into something else while you locate them or are things which are located so nicely that you know they can’t survive.] It was easy to forgive Bob for never sitting still, being so busy and suddenly changing hats and media, leaving the rest of us in the dust of his momentum while chasing epiphanies. He was this way often because he was frequently racing to make sure that many other people had many intangible gifts that should be located so nicely as to remain what we remember about knowing him. 

Dear Attea Family, I am so saddened by Bob’s passing. He seemed too strong, too smart, too determined, too in charge to ever loose a fight. It was a privilege to work for him. Since I am supposed to share a memory I will. About 12 years ago, he stopped at my desk to pick on me.  We talked a little and I told him that later that day, my entire family was flying out to Jax, FL to visit our daughter Elly and go to a Bills game. He asked me what the hell I was doing at the office when I was flying out hours later.  He said, ‘Get out of here, Go home and enjoy your visit’ I explained that I hadn’t driven and was being picked up just in time to go to the airport. He drove me home. I was just an assistant in the construction department, but he didn’t care about my position. Later, when I worked my up and had my own office, he would stop down and talk about your place in Wilson and tell the story of sailing the boat in near hurricane force wind and waves. He was a force to be reckoned with but with  a tender heart and clear vision. You lost someone very special. My condolences. 

Jonathan: My heartfelt prayers to you and the entire Attea family on Bob's passing.  It brings up so many good memories that I have from working and learning from your Dad.  I remember our first conversation speaking with him about his vision for the future of Sovran when he mergered his company with the guys.  I think even he would have admitted that he never envisioned the success of Sovran - Uncle Bob's - Life Storage would achieve.  He leaves behind a legacy of industry leadership within WNY and the  self storage world.

Bob was an accomplished yet understated man. He was a gentleman and a good guy with a smile on his face. Bob had a great sense of humor and it was always a pleasure to see him. Eileen and I send our condolences.

So very sorry to learn of Bob’s passing.
He was so bright, energetic, youthful, and funny.

Bob had studied Saxophone when he was a young lad with the world renowned teacher John Sedola. Years later Bob reignited his passion for the instrument and became laser focused on regaining (and surpassing) his prior gifted proficiency. And by God, he did just that.
It was amazing to see him accelerate so quickly - genius abilities...

I’m so sorry to hear of Bob’s passing and my condolences to his family.  While I only knew Bob for a short time I cherished his friendship.  My memories of Bob are mostly on the golf course and one particular moment stands out.  Bob’s rule was he would only pay out $5 maximum if he lost or take a maximum of $5 if he won, it was known as the Attea Rule and it often came in handy!  One day as happened frequently I lost to Bob (more than $5) and I came prepared and on the 18th green I handed him a $5 gift card to Dairy Queen...the two of us laughed so hard.  It was his love of golf, ice cream and most of all family that I loved about him.  Bob will be dearly missed but not forgotten.
