

Dr. Ariel David was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and highly regarded and dedicated adult and child psychiatrist. He passed away peacefully at his home in Chicago, IL surrounded by loved ones.
Ariel “Relu” David was born in Galati, Romania on July 4th, 1929. After surviving WWII, he remained in Romania through the completion of his medical degree at Carol Davila University of Medicine in Bucharest in 1958. From Romania, Dr. David traveled to Israel where he met Denise David (née Waisman), April 24, 1932- February 27, 2020, his loving wife of 58 years. The two moved to Chicago in 1961, where Dr. David completed his training at Northwestern University School of Medicine and at the Institute for Juvenile Research. From 1967-1971, Dr. David lived in Montreal, Canada, where he was affiliated with McGill University. In 1971, Dr. and Mrs. David returned to Chicago and Dr. David was posted on the faculty at Northwestern University School of Medicine, where he supervised numerous residents and fellows. He also held appointments at St. Joseph Hospital, from 1972 to 2013, when he retired with Emeritus status, and at the old Columbus, Cuneo and Cabrini hospitals. Concurrently he served several mental health facilities in the city and managed a solo private practice.
Over the years, Dr. David developed many lasting and meaningful connections in Chicago, through his family, friends, profession, and his deep appreciation of music and culture. Dr. David was a regular and recognized fixture at the Lyric Opera, and a repository of memories and details related to performances there spanning decades. Dr. David is survived by two daughters and three grandsons.
