Michael “Mike” Glass, 74, of Chicago, passed away on July 1, 2022 after a 12 year battle with multiple myeloma. He is survived by his longtime partner Marie Beckman; sons Ari (Melissa), Scott (Tracy) and Ian (Emily), and sister Kathye (Greg). He was the proud grandfather of Inman, Ava, Brin, Julia, Ben, and Addie, and was also ‘grandpa’ to Emma, Carter, Cal, Cole and Max.
Mike graduated from Bradley University with a degree in International Studies, after which he pursued a master’s degree at George Washington University. He believed in the inherent dignity of all people, and he dedicated himself to this principle throughout his professional life. His tireless efforts on behalf of the vulnerable and marginalized in society led Mike to consult and fundraise for many major non-profit organizations, including Hull House in Chicago, the Special Olympics, the Chicago Theological Seminary, the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care, and the National Urban League.
He was especially proud of his work at the Urban League, which, in the 1970s, included playing a key role on a Presidential Commission that sought to update Section 8, the federal program committed to ensuring the right to fair housing for all people.
Mike’s family, friends, and colleagues will miss his determination and generosity. And they will miss his dogged loyalty, love for the underdog, and incredible sense of humor--characteristics nurtured in him by his parents, Jack and Carolyn, and no doubt sharpened as a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.
