Robert James Kemp, whose tenacity, wit, and intelligence touched us all, passed away peacefully at age 89 in Evanston Hospital on October 25, 2022, at the side of his loving wife, Carol. Our love for him as well as the memories we made together will keep him alive in our hearts always.
He was born on November 8, 1932, in Chicago, IL, the son of Stanley and Julia Kemp. He was a lifelong resident of Chicago, IL and Evanston, IL. He attended University of Illinois–Navy Pier and earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, IL in 1954. He then earned his master’s in social work from the University of Chicago, Chicago, IL in 1959. He married the love of his life Carol Wessman in Wilmette, IL on December 23rd, 1979. He served for two years (1954-1956) in the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C. during the Korean War, served as a member of the Vivekananda Vedanta Society, and also served as the president of the McWhinney Benevolent Association.
Robert, affectionately known as “Papa” by many loved ones, was truly one of the greats. He worked as a social worker in Wheeling, IL for decades, through which he accumulated a quiet wisdom that was felt wherever he went. Although he would blush at being called it, he was a worldly man, travelling to over 30 countries in his lifetime. He was an avid tennis player and lifelong Cubs fan who was a regular in the bleachers every summer. Robert was also known for his style. Whether it be a classy hat, a lovely sweater and shirt combination, or patterned pants, he made his look his own, which only made his wry sense of humor, trademark deadpan tone, and revolutionary spirit all the more endearing.
Robert will be dearly missed by his wife Carol Kemp; brother Fred (Susan Sarvay) Kemp; children, Jeffery Ransom, Julie (Gary) Geiger and Jason (Martha) Ransom; grandchildren, Lindsey (Robbie) Johansen, Hughes Ransom, Jacob Geiger, Kathryn (Tyler) Vogt, and Jack Ransom; great grandchild, Otis Johansen; nephews, David Kemp, Nicholas (Jesse Yarbrough) Kemp, and many lifelong family and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Julia and Stanley Kemp, and his nephew, Paul Kemp.
A memorial celebration will be held at Wm. H. Scott Funeral Home, 1100 Greenleaf Avenue, Wilmette, IL 60091 on Sunday, October 30 from 2pm-4pm.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.WmScottFuneralHome.com for the Kemp family.
