Loved this man, loved talking to him when I cut his hair.

My deepest sympathies go out to you, Elaine and your family.  Look back on all the good memories you were able to have and smile at the fact that you were able to share these before Shelly passed.

I only received the news of Shelly's passing today (4/13), and wish to express my deepest sympathy to Elaine and the family. I have many fond memories of my years at Best's Kosher, and of Shelly in particular. He was a true gentleman. May he rest in peace.

Shelly was a wonderful man to know and work with. I learned a lot from Shelly about how to conduct business and how to seal a deal. 
The first time I met Shelly was at the merger meeting of Best's Kosher and Sinai Kosher. We were all concerned that as with any acquisition our jobs could be in jeopardy or that lack of communication could lead to failure of the whole company. After all for many years we were competing companies and I was at Sinai Kosher. Shelly's warm smile and embrace alleviated everyone's fears immediately. He was fun to listen to and he listened well to everyone.
His sandpaper voice would sometimes be booming with an instruction but never demeaning and always with compassion.
I remember when he entrusted me with the company's reputation when I represented Best's Kosher at the first ever Costco Charity Golf outing. I was not a golfer, I didn't own any clubs and didn't even know what a tee was nor what a bogey or birdie was. He gave me his golf clubs and I wasn't sure which was worse, using Shelly's sacred golf clubs or getting on the plane to Seattle for the match. He was optimistic and trusted my abilities as a tennis player to do well in golf. He did suggest quick golf lessons, though. I did well at this event. It was this type of lesson, a matter of trust, optimism, listening to your clients and sealing the deal that served me well in my business life with Best's Kosher and beyond. 
Shelly was a great guy, I'm glad that I knew him.

Dear Uncle Shelly, today when I received the sad news that you would be leaving us soon, I listened to the thunder outside & couldn't help smiling through my tears. I flashed back fondly to my summers working in the noisy bright pastrami-scented Best Kosher office where several times a day amid the general commotion of voices you would let out a thunderous roar ("for Gdsake, Milt, ....) that would make my teeth chatter--'til I realized it was just the way you talked at work. Tonight the thunder continues and I hear in it a farewell drumroll for a brave ww2 airman--& a dear big-shouldered uncle with the kindest movie-star smile who towered over everyone even in "old age." Hope you & Dad are partying

Dear family, I am so sorry for your loss.what a long life to live.I know that he will be miss,you have my deepest sympithy

On April 9 we said goodbye to the finest man I have ever known. My dad left this world at 6:08 p.m. surrounded by those he loved after a week in the hospital that can only be described as a love fest. He delayed his departure a few days ago for Cubs opening day and watched the game in ICU surrounded by his bride of 68 years, his children and grandchildren. He graced us with 92 years and left 4 children, spouses, 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He left us listening to Pachelbel's Canon in D Major. He never had a bad moment. My siblings, children and all the grandchildren thank him. We are who we are because of Sheldon Sternberg.
