She was a devoted grandmother to Scott Slavick (Joanna Ruder), Marni Slavick (Eric Israel), Sarah Slavick (Ben Malakoff) and Bradley Slavick (Megan Justus), and great grandmother to Spencer, Benjamin, Jake, Norah, Arthur and Maya. She was a loving aunt and cousin to all that adored her. She left this world after an illness, on December 26 at age 104.
Her favorite song, “What A Wonderful World,” reflected the beauty she saw around her. Throughout her life, she demonstrated love for family, music, art, Judaism and learning. Exceptional for her time, Shirley attended Northwestern University, where she earned a B.S. in Education Studies.
Shirley was a lifelong resident of Chicago, born to Mandel and Frieda Shiner, and had two siblings, Seymour Shiner (z”l) and Gilda (Shiner) Bucky (z”l). She met her husband, Sam, through the Kalman & Hannah Wenig family club of which his sister Ethel (Slavick) Wenig (z”l) and her husband, Harry Wenig (z”l) were devoted members.
She loved her synagogue B’Nai Zion in East Rogers Park, where she served as Secretary for many years. Professionally, she managed the family real estate business with her father and brother, and worked for real estate companies in an administrative role, and Shure Brothers as executive assistant to the Chairman for many years.
