Born on September 10, 1938, Walter grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and developed the strong character and determination that would guide him throughout his life. A gifted athlete, he played football and ran track in high school before earning an undergraduate degree and MBA from Dartmouth College and the Tuck School of Business.
Walter was a visionary businessman with an exceptional understanding of what drives success in the vehicle leasing, corporate travel, and consumer goods industries. His career spanned many businesses, including leadership roles at IVI Travel, Wheels Inc., and Yoplait Yogurt. He advised numerous consumer companies, always maintaining his keen focus on strong margins and sustainable growth. His business acumen was matched only by his generous spirit and commitment to giving back.
In 1984, Walter married Karen Harrison, beginning a 40-year partnership filled with love, respect, and adventure. Their relationship was a testament to their enduring love and mutual support, and Karen remained the light of his life until his final days. Walter lived life to the fullest, pursuing his passions with characteristic enthusiasm. He was an avid skier who found joy on the slopes of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where he and Karen maintained a home that became a gathering place for family adventures. He also cherished countless peaceful days at their lake house in Michigan, where the tranquil waters provided the perfect backdrop for family memories and quiet reflection.
A devoted alumnus, Walter remained deeply connected to Dartmouth throughout his life. He was particularly excited to join fellow alums as they approached their 65th reunion this fall. His loyal philanthropy was directed to the Tuck Business Bridge program, and he was immensely proud of this connection.
Together with Karen, he also supported numerous charitable organizations, including the Chicago Children's Museum, Facing History, and the Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship at Case Western Reserve University, reflecting their shared commitment to education and community service.
Above all, Walter was a loving family man who took immense pride in his large and growing family. He is survived by his wife, Karen Harrison; his brother, Howard, and his wife, Rita; his four children and their spouses: Debbie and Greg Clower, Amy and Dan Jurkowitz, Michael and Tracy Freedman, Doug and Nina Freedman. He also leaves a legacy of 16 grandchildren and their spouses, and 2 great-grandchildren. In addition, Karen's extended family of two sisters and their husbands, as well as 3 nieces and a nephew, and 3 great-nieces and 3 great-nephews, will miss him dearly.
Walter's legacy lives on in the successful businesses he grew, the institutions he supported, the family he cherished, and the countless lives he touched with his wisdom, generosity, and unwavering love. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
