Maria Nenita “Bubot” Gonzales Maniquis was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She passed away on January 10, 2023, at the age of 69, surrounded by her loved ones.
She was the fourth out of seven siblings, born on December 5, 1953, to Napoleon and Nenita Gonzales in San Miguel, Bulacan, Philippines.
Bubot was a loving wife, married to Victor Maniquis on January 2, 1971, and recently reached their milestone of 52 years of marriage. She loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family and friends. Her passion for cooking was evident to those who know her and have tasted her delicious dishes, most especially to her husband who can eat her Chicken Caldereta for lunch for a whole week.
She loved keeping in touch with her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with daily video calls.
As a mother, she was someone who would give her daughters the last bite of anything. She made sure her daughters had what they needed before thinking of herself. She would go on a road trip with you when you're feeling blue despite her fear of how fast you drive.
As a grandmother, distance did not stop her from shopping for clothes, toys, and cooking seasonings for her grandchildren and sending them back to the Philippines or the UK. Important occasions were also celebrated by cooking pansit on birthdays, even though the celebrants were thousands of miles away.
Bubot was a loving sister and often visited her younger sister, Rose, and younger brother, Manny, who both reside in the Bay Area. Christmas and New Year were often celebrated with them and their families, and she made every effort to join them and cook for them every year. She also kept in touch with her older brother, Winnie, and younger sister, Cynthia, who reside in different parts of the world.
She was the "Nanay Bubot" of everyone. Her nephews, nieces, and cousins called her to show their new recipes, to copy hers, or to request for food they were craving for. Bubot frequently called her friends to catch up on the latest gossip, ask what’s the menu for the day, or teach them how to cook and follow her recipes. She kept in touch even with her childhood friends and the kids she baby-sat for years. She has an extraordinary gift in connecting and maintaining relationships with people she loves.
Bubot is survived by her husband, Victor, her daughter Jocelyn and her husband Paolo; her daughter Bernadette and her husband Robert; and youngest daughter Mary Grace, her eight grandchildren: Ralph, Inno Victor, Juan Paolo, Gia Pauline, Joanna June, Robert Bernard and wife Janzzen, Robert Benedict, Robert Victor, and three great-grandchildren: Rhiann Ruth, Hans Paolo, and Jaezelle Louise.
