On Tuesday, November 13, 2012, Pop left this earth and took his last ride-the highway to Heaven. He was 76 years old.
Pop was born on February 29, 1936(A true Leap Year Baby!) in Columbus County NC, the son of John L. Powell and Lovie Walker Powell. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 38 years, (Elizabeth) Jean Blake Powell, two sisters, Pearl Spivey and Eula Maye Pierce, two Brothers, John L. Powell Jr. and Gene Powell, a son-in-law (Wayne Britt), and a daughter-in-law(Gwen Powell). He is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Janice Powell, four adored children: Billy Powell Jr. (Peggy), Sherry Britt, Rick Powell, and Kimberly Scott (David). Also surviving are two step-children, Debbie Wilson (Rob) and Billy Boone (Karen). Surviving as well are 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a brother, Robert Powell (Barbara) a sister, Clara Worrell (Jerry), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pop spent a lifetime passionately cruising the highways and interstates and was definitely a “Human GPS” if there was ever one. One of his famed quotes was “I’ve driven more miles in reverse than most people have driven forward.”
He spent 52 years on the roads hitting every avenue, boulevard, and exit ramp in the continental United States, and culminated his long career driving a truck locally with his two sons. He will be sorely missed by all of his many friends in the trucking industry and his “breakfast clubs” pals at Hardees.
Dad, Daddy, Pop, Papa and B….Until we meet again.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 15, 2012 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Coble Ward-Smith Oleander Chapel. Following that there will be food and reminiscing at Bill and Peggy’s house.
A funeral service will be held at the funeral home for Mr. Powell on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 2:00pm. Burial will follow at GreenLawn Memorial Park.
