

Graduating from Duke University, she worked in social services until her marriage to Jack Mills in April 1955. Being in marking and sales required several moves during her married life – from New Jersey, Illinois, Wisconsin and Texas prior to her move to Wilmington, NC.
Carol was a dedicated, devoted stay at home mom, taking care of her three children, Jack Jr., Caryn and Barbara.
Retiring in 1990, following a three-year research of locations, fell in love with Wilmington, NC. She not only loved the beach but also enjoyed boating, having a slip at Seapath Yacht Club and navigating the inter coastal waterway.
It didn’t take long to become active in her community. Having graduated from their Adult Scholars program at UNCW in 1994 she began her active volunteer career. She served on the Friends of the Library board in their annual book sale, served Meals on Wheels for 20 years, helped students earn their GED through the Cape Fear Literacy Council and was a strong supporter of UNCW, Cape Fear Community College and the Cape Fear Museum. She and her husband were world travelers.
Carols special interest was her membership in P.E.O. being an active member for 50 years throughout her 67 years of marriage. She served as President for several chapters throughout her career P.E.O. membership provided instant friendship as she and her husband moved over their careers.
Carol is survived by her loving husband, Jack, and her two daughters, Caryn and Barbara. She is also survived by six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, son-in-law, David LaVere; daughter-in-law Theresa; brother, Walter Hiester and sister-law-law, Brenda.
She was well known for her permanent smile in any situation and always exhibited a positive attitude.
The family offers a special thank you to the staff at Bradley Creek for taking good care of her during her last 14 months. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: P.E.O. Chapter AA, in care of Reginia McLihram, 2347 Sugargrove Trail, N.E., Leland, NC 28451. P.E.O. is a philanthropic educational organization providing educational opportunities for young women.
