She was born November 14, 1933, in West Virginia, daughter of the late Joseph and Hazel Kemper. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Dr. Darwin Newton, as well as her sisters Lucy Born, Eleanor Kemper, and Jean Helwig.
Catherine grew up on a farm in Virginia, attended college, and worked for the government before marrying her husband. Her greatest joy was being a loving and devoted mother, wife, and homemaker. She was warm and generous to everyone she met, and always had an open door and time for company. She was a wonderful Mema to her grandchildren, as well as to any friends brought over to meet her. You knew you were family upon meeting Mema. She loved anything to do with the outdoors, including flowers, birds, yard work, and gardening. She especially enjoyed growing large crops of tomatoes – and giving away most of them to family, friends, and neighbors. She also loved cooking, conversation, and a great bargain. When her husband’s health declined, she went to great lengths to take care of him.
Catherine is survived by a son, Thomas Darwin Newton, and a daughter, Ann Marie Newton (both of Wilmington, N.C.). She is also survived by four loving grandchildren: Zachary, Thomas, Gabriella and Stirling.
Catherine requested a private graveside service.
