Elmer Purdie Smith

Elmer Purdie Smith, 86, of Leland, NC, died Saturday, October 18, 2014 at his home. He was born on November 11, 1927. He was the son of the late Eddie G. Smith and Eilgia Kelly Smith and the step-son of Helen C. Smith. Elmer is preceded in death by His wife, Hazel Smith, and two brothers, Earl Smith and EJ Smith. Elmer was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. He is survived by three daughters - Chellie (Jim) Thomson and Anita (Ron) Twigg, all of Wilmington, NC and Mary Stewart of the home; four sisters - Peggy Poole of Clinton, Hazel (JC) Chadwick and Edna New, all of Elizabethtown and Mary Ruth Grange of FL; four brothers - Howe (Betty) Smith of Garland, Robert (Kattie) Smith of Ammon; Wilbur Smith of Elizabethtown, and Larry (Ann) Smith of Roseboro; and a special first cousin, Barbara Biship of Garland. He is also survived by six grandchildren - Brad (Shelley) Thomson, Adrienne Thomson, Heather Thomson, and Christina Twigg, all of Wilmington; Charles (Melissa) McCarroll of the home; and Carrie (Marvin) Williams of Burlington, NC; three special great-grandchildren - Elizabeth-Ann Thomson of Wilmington, NC; Nathan McCarroll of the home, and Monica Williams of Burlington, NC; three step-grandchildren, Marcy, Becky, and Ronnie (Jessica) Twigg, all of Cumberland, MD.; six step-great-grandchildren - Owen, Alex, and Ellen Winebrinner; Skyler, Ant (nickname), and Charles Twigg, all of Cumberland, MD. A funeral service will be held 11am Thursday October 23, 2014 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel by Rev. Arnold Griffin. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends form 7pm until 8pm Wednesday October 22, 2014 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.
