

Fran Sherman passed away after a long illness, on June 3, 2014, with her family at her side. Born in Texas on March 24, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Winifred and Luther Gilbert Stevens. She was an inspired and talented fashion illustrator, artist, and sculptor. One of her latest sculptures, that of Jay Robinson, is prominently placed in the Watson School of Education Building at UNCW. She was an avid tennis player, gardener and bridge partner. Fran lived to enjoy life and its mysteries. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, wonderful homemaker, and special friend to many. Art was her passion. She studied at UNCW and at an artist colony in San Miguel de Allende. Her athleticism and competitive spirit were expressed in her tennis and included a trip to Mexico with a leading tennis team from Florida. She had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel the world with her loving husband Lee. She is survived by her husband Col. Lee M. Sherman. Mother of Bob Sieker, Kellie Burke Trivers, and Jody Burke. Franmommy to Kimberly Clark, Jodie Beare, Rebecca Burke, and Graham Burke. Great Franmommy to Shannon and Samantha Clark. Step-mother of Linda Retz, Renee Jones, and Julie Dube. Loving Aunt to Mary Frances Clark, Steven Robbins, Rocky Robbins, Gayle Gunter, and Gwen Gaither. With sincere gratitude to Fran's wonderful caregivers, the family wishes that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC, 28401. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel with Chaplain Joe Jankowiak officiating. The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 3:00 p.m. Sunday until the service hour.
