Gary was born in 1956 and raised on a family farm in Suttontown, North Carolina, where he learned the true meaning of hard work and the importance of family. These values shaped the life he lived—a life dedicated to service, including 30 years in law enforcement. Even after retirement, Gary continued working as a security guard at Figure Eight Island. He took great pride in his work and formed lasting friendships with those fortunate enough to work alongside him.
Gary had many passions. He loved boating, driving his Jeep to Fort Fisher beach to fish and enjoy a good nap. He cherished traveling with his wife and spending time with family and friends at the river. He was known for cooking stand-up chicken, hosting a good old pig pickin’, and could fix just about anything— like MacGyver. Gary enjoyed telling a good story, and nothing brought him more joy than spoiling his granddaughter, “Kayla Bug,” every chance he got.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 37 years, Mickey Best, his children; Lara Cribb and Josh Burns; his granddaughter, Kayla Cribb; his sisters, Debbie Stewart and Pat Cox; his beloved pup, Astro; and numerous extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Genetha Best, and his siblings, Rooster and MaryJohn.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date to honor Gary’s life and legacy.
Gary will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the love he gave so freely and the joy he brought to those around him. He truly never met a stranger.
