Mrs. Geraldine Cathey Taylor, 85, died a quiet and peaceful death on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. Geraldine Cathey was born on August 25, 1928, in Mecklenburg County, the daughter of the late William Albertus Cathey and Ashby Henderson Cathey Hipp. Although only the youngest of two children, she was brought up in a large and loving community of the Cathey and Henderson families, centered around the Paw Creek Presbyterian Church in Paw Creek, NC, just outside of Charlotte, NC. On March 27, 1949, Geraldine Cathey married William M. (Bill) Taylor, a former Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Air Corps in World War II, who, as one of the Flying Tigers, flew missions over the Himalayas in a B-24 bomber. Bill and Geraldine moved to Wilmington, NC, in 1956, where they raised three children and enjoyed a full life together. Geraldine's great loves, in addition to her late husband Bill, were her children, her extended family, her lifelong friends, music and an abiding passion in careworn simple antiques. She also loved old Wilmington; its grace, art and architecture, and made the city her own. Surviving are her children, son William Keith (Kit) Taylor and his wife, Norma Cameron Taylor, of Scotts Hill, NC, and granddaughter Cameron Ashby Taylor of Takoma Park, MD; son Scott MacDonald Taylor of Chapel Hill, NC, and daughter Amy Cathey Taylor of Wilmington, NC. In addition are Geraldine's brother Glenn Martin Cathey and his wife Mary Helms Cathey, of Martinsville, Va. Geraldine's Neurologist for over ten years, Dr. David Cook, MD, perhaps described her best in four words: "Extraordinary woman. Beautiful heart." A visitation with the family will be held at Andrews Mortuary on Market Street, in Wilmington, NC, from 6 to 8 PM, on Saturday, January 25, 2014. Geraldine Cathey Taylor's funeral will be held at Winter Park Presbyterian Church on Wrightsville Avenue, in Wilmington, NC, at 2 PM on Sunday, January 26, 2014. The following day, on Monday, January 27, 2014, Geraldine Cathey Taylor will be laid to rest beside her late husband, Bill Taylor, in a graveside service in the Taylor family plot in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Charlotte, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Winter Park Presbyterian Church. Condolences to the family may be sent to the family at www.andrewsmortuary.com. Geraldine's children would like to extend their special gratitude to their Mother's loving home caregivers, Ms. Diane Milner, Ms. Kym Barton and Ms. Gloria Allen.
