

Herbert Randolph Nubel passed away January 16th, 2009 in Wilmington, NC after a valiant battle with cancer. He was 78. Mr. Nubel was born August 21, 1930 in Bay Shore, NY. He was the son of Marjorie P. Nubel and Herbert R. Nubel. Herb grew up around the water, and loved boating, sailing, swimming and fishing. He was also an avid artist and photographer. Mr. Nubel graduated from Garden City, NY High School in 1948, from Dartmouth College in 1952 with a degree in Art History and from Yale University in 1956 with a Masters degree in Graphic Arts. He served in the US Army in Korea and earned the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Service Star, UN Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He married Jonilu Swearingen of Austin, TX in June 1960. The couple resided in NJ. Mr. Nubel worked as a graphic designer for Ciba Pharmaceuticals and Sterling Drug in NYC. His work with Sterling took him to Brazil and Venezuela. He traveled extensively throughout South America. Mrs. Nubel passed away in 1985. Mr. Nubel later joined the Peace Corps, serving in Slovakia on several educational and marketing projects. He also participated in various marketing projects in Eastern Europe and Egypt with the International Retired Executives Corp. His love of sailing often found him on the Maine coast, sailing with friends, including Mattie Mosher of Hope, ME. He purchased his own sailboat, sailing locally in NC and with friends to the Caribbean. Mr. Nubel is survived by his sister Carolyn N. DeTurk, nieces Nancy L. DeTurk and Debi DeTurk Peloso and nephew Eric M. DeTurk. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 2222 South 17th Street, Wilmington, NC 28401
