It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Ashley Holt, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and a true pioneer in the field of mine safety. Jack left us peacefully on November 2nd, after a courageous battle with dementia.
Born on January 6th 1949 in Hinton, West Virginia to Jack and Enola Holt, Jack was a man of exceptional intellect and compassion. His early life was marked by a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit, which inspired him to found many early “start-ups” in his high school career, including a pet cemetery, driving school and a mineral water company he called “Holt’s Crystal Clear.”
Jack was a natural born leader. He was president of his High School Class, his fraternity (Pi Kappa Alpha) and his freshmen through senior class at Marshall University (among many other honors too numerous to list). He also led several of his family members to join him in his passion for running races, including marathons!
Jack’s enterprising nature eventually led him to a distinguished career in mine safety. His innovative spirit and unwavering commitment to the well-being of miners brought about groundbreaking changes in the industry. His work not only improved but saved countless lives, earning him deep respect and admiration from colleagues and workers alike.
Jack's dedication to safety was paralleled only by his love for his family. A devoted husband to his wife Judy for 50 years, he was a pillar of strength, support, and love. As a father, he instilled in his children the values of hard work, integrity, and kindness. His grandchildren knew him as a playful and gentle soul, who always wore a smile and woke up early to buy them donuts.
Those who knew Jack understood that his influence extended far beyond his professional achievements. He was a mentor to many, always ready to offer guidance and support. His infectious smile, warm embrace, and genuine interest in the lives of others made him beloved by everyone he met.
Jack's legacy is not only in the safer mines he leaves behind but in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be profoundly missed, yet his spirit will continue to inspire us all.
Jack is survived by his wife Judy Jones Holt; children: Jack (Sandy), Kristin Stadler (Mike), his grandchildren: Jadyn and Jaclyn Holt and Dylan Stadler, his stepmother Katherine Holt, mother-in- law Rhodetta Jones and his beloved dog Disney.
When he retired, Jack’s passion was to reinvigorate his hometown of Hinton, West Virginia. He spent countless hours on this cause. In lieu of flowers, we ask you to donate to the organization near and dear to his heart: www.hhsmad.org.
Celebrations of his life will be held at some later dates.
