

James Glover Tompkins III 9-26-1926 to 5-11-2013 Jim died after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sue; daughter, Fredrica Cryan, son, James Tompkins IV and wife, Angela, daughter, Lucy Goodpaster and husband, Mark; six grandchildren: James and Elizabeth Cryan, Clare and Philip Tompkins, Marcus and Ashlee Goodpaster. He is predeceased by his son-in-law Ken Cryan. Jim served as a Cadet Midshipman towards the end of World War II and returned to the United States Merchant Marine Academy before going to Georgetown University. He devoted his professional life to the shipping world with Lykes Brothers Steamship Company. He was active with the British American Business Association in Houston, the German American Chamber of Commerce, the World Trade Organization, and the Rotary Clubs in Brownsville, London, Antwerp, Houston and Hampstead. He also served as the NATO Advisor for Merchant shipping, and was the recipient of the German Service Cross. He and his family lived in New Orleans, Brownsville, London, Antwerp and Houston. He and Sue retired to Olde Point in Hampstead in 1992. Services will be on held Friday, 5/17/13 at 11.00a.m. at Holy Trinity Church in Hampstead N.C.
