John H. Sherman

John H. Sherman of Wilmington, age 96, passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Davis Health Care Center, Wilmington. He was born on November 3, 1921 in Thames Ditton (London), England to American parents, Darwin W. Sherman and Phyllis McBride Sherman. John graduated from Bronxville, N.Y. High School and then attended Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA. When World War II started he joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the South Pacific, primarily in New Guinea.

After 36 years in the paper industry, he retired as Vice President of Walter D. Peek Inc., New York City.

His wife Jeanne Graham Sherman, an infant son, Scott, his sister, Phyllis M. Barnes and stepson, James H. Gerberding, preceded John in death. Surviving family members are nieces, Barbara Wissbaum and husband Michael of Charlotte, NC, Betsy Parker and her husband Tom of Richmond, VA, two step-grandsons (Craig and Eric Gerberding) and seven step-great grandchildren.

Memorial service with military honors will be held at Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel on Friday, November 17, 2017 at 2:00pm. Inurnment will be in Bronxville Cemetery, Bronxville, NY.
