Born in Philadelphia, PA on December 19, 1944 to William and Concetta (Pinciotti) Formica, Joyce grew up in the home her father built on Lawndale Ave. in Northeast Philadelphia. She became a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and cousin whose world revolved around her family.
Joyce was predeceased by her devoted husband, Bernard “Bernie” Maguire in 2023. They were married on May 8, 1965, and were a shining example of a true partnership in faith, love, and companionship. Their journey began with their courtship in Philadelphia, continued with moves across the East Coast—including Charleston, SC; Pittsburgh, PA; Glen Mills, PA; and Simsbury, CT—and planted roots for over 30 years in Vienna, VA, before spending their golden years in Wilmington, NC.
Inspired by her compassion for others and her love of science, which began at St. Basil Academy, Joyce earned her nursing degree from Bryn Mawr Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA. She used her skills to oversee the health and caregiving for her husband, children, grandchildren, and countless friends and family throughout her life. Always eager to listen or help, she was the family’s trusted source for advice. Her love for babies was unmatched—nieces, nephews, and grandchildren all found comfort and joy in her arms.
Joyce stood beside Bernie as his primary confidant, caretaker, stabilizing force for over 60 years and was the quiet engine behind all of their accomplishments. She dedicated her life to raising her children. Mimi, as she was lovingly known, adored her grandchildren and took joy in their growth and pride in their achievements. She valued their education, supported their activities, and celebrated every accomplishment. She was in the front row at as many events as she was able to attend and enjoyed their passions with them. Her family could always count on her as the primary cheerleader for the entire clan. Although she was soft-spoken it was always easy to hear her cheering from the field, stage, or event.
When not cheering for one of her own, Joyce pursued her personal passions and shared them generously. She was a master gardener, accomplished cook and baker, talented decorator, avid reader, devoted beach and nature enthusiast, and gifted recreational shopper (not spender). She made it her personal mission to share these passions with her children and grandchildren and spent countless hours teaching them all she knew. Her home was always open and welcoming. Many would attest that her listening ear could soothe any worry and her hugs could cure the most broken heart.
Joyce also generously gave her time to her community. She was more recently a member of the Porters Neck Home and Garden Club and the Cape Fear Garden Club, including the Azalea Festival Committee, and volunteered with many organizations throughout her life, most notably serving for many years on PTA boards. She was also a resident at Trinity Landing senior living community where she took part in many groups and community activities. The phrase “on the go” is an apt description for how she lived life. Most importantly, Joyce was a faithful member of the Catholic Church and an active parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Wilmington, NC.
Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved and immensely missed husband, Bernard Augustine “Bernie” Maguire and her loving parents, William and Concetta (Pinciotti) Formica.
Joyce is survived by her four children and ten grandchildren; Brad and Kate (Robinson) and their children Matthew, Samuel (Lily), Joseph, and Lucy; Mark and Shelly (Allbee) and their children Zoe and Natalie; John and Wendy (Lyall) and their children Sydney, Molly, and Mary Catherine; and Megan and her daughter Madeleine. She is also survived by her brothers William Formica (Carol) and Michael Formica (Nancy) along with many beloved relatives and friends.
The Maguire family extends heartfelt thanks to all the medical teams and support staff at Novant Neuroscience Institute and Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center for their care and compassion.
Known for her beauty, grace, kindness, gentle spirit, and signature red lipstick, Joyce leaves a lasting legacy in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. May her legacy bring comfort and inspiration to all who were touched by her presence. A Funeral Mass will be held on February 20, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 6650 Carolina Beach Rd, Wilmington, NC.
