Kathryn (Kitty) Kohberger Johnston died on Friday, April 20, 2018. She was born February 14, 1916 in Pittsburgh, PA. She was the daughter of Dr. Henry Paul Kohberger and Kathryn Weber Kohberger. Her beloved husband, Cdr. Robert Bruce Johnston, II, preceded her in death.
Kathryn graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and earned a graduate degree from Carnegie Mellon University. In World War II, she served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy. After the war, she worked for the Pittsburgh Public Library and as a children’s storyteller on the KDKA Radio Story Hour. She was known as “The Mother Goose” of Pittsburgh! She and her family moved to Wilmington in 1963.
Kathryn was an avid reader, loved to cook, and was seen most days in the summer at the Carolina Yacht Club. She was a long time member of Friends of the Library, Thalian Association, and the Historical Society of the Lower Cape Fear. She was a docent for years for St. John’s Art Gallery and Cameron Art Museum. She was a member of the Cape Fear Country Club.
Surviving are her children: Robert Bruce Johnston, III, Kathryn J. Winston, Barbara J. Bush (Cameron), and William E. Johnston. She has five grandchildren: Kathryn Gibson(Garrett), Robert Winston (Becky), Forbes Winston, Helen Johnston, and Isabel Winston. Five grandchildren: Robbie and Bridges Winston, Emma, Gwen, and Asher Gibson.
There will be a memorial service on Thursday, April 26 at 11:00 am at the St. Francis Memorial Garden at St. James Parish. Celebration of Life at her home following the service.
