Les was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was a man of Christ and a friend to all who knew him. His was a kind and gentle soul and he had a tremendous presence in other’s lives. He lived his life with quiet strength and led most often by doing rather than speaking.
Leslie Gordon Collins, Jr. was born in Kinston, NC on May 14, 1944, the son of the late Leslie Gordon, Sr. and Alma Cox Collins. He grew up in Jamestown, NC where he attended Ragsdale High School and graduated UNC-Chapel Hill in 1966. He completed UNC’s School of Pharmacy in 1969 and worked as a pharmacist throughout his career. He took great pride in helping those in his care. Les was a lifelong member of Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church in Wilmington. He served his church as a deacon and as an accomplished musician. He sang in the choir and also played the banjo, the French horn and the piano. He loved Carolina basketball, animals (especially dogs), hunting, fishing, golf and gardening.
He is survived by the love of his life, Billie Jo Thorburn Collins, his wife of more than 51 years; sister, Sandra Collins Yarber; daughter, Stephanie Collins Newton and her husband Ed Newton; son, Geoff Collins and his wife Julie Collins; grandchildren, Sallie Graham Newton, Caroline Newton, William Newton, Ben Collins, and Lucy Collins.
Les adored his children, his beautiful grandchildren (who lovingly called him Poppa), and his many nieces and nephews. Most of all he loved the Lord. His family and friends take great comfort in the assurance of eternal life, as Les is at rest with his Savior.
