

Lina Schad Smith, 79, of Wilmington, NC, died peacefully Monday, June 25, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on December 20, 1932, in Maubach, Germany, the daughter of the late Friedrich George Schad and Luise Wörner Schad. Lina was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Smith, Sr. and a brother, Fritz Schad. She is survived by seven children, Marlene M. Smith and husband Andrew Santiago, James Robert Smith, Jr. and wife Teresa, all of Rocky Point, NC, Melinda S. Hughes, David Lee Smith and wife Sharon, Dylah S. Madej and husband Mike and Christopher Mark Smith and wife Trisha, all of Wilmington, NC, and Eric E. Smith of Raleigh, NC; nine grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Anneliese Holzmuller of Austria, Lore Weinstein and Klara Mau both of Germany. A memorial service will be held 3:00 pm Thursday, June 28, 2012 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church with The Rev. John Misenheimer officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service at the church. The family would like to express a special note of gratitude to Dr. Leo Warshauer, Dr. Marsha Fretwell, Chaplain Sweetie Francis, family friend Lenell Henry, hospice caregivers, Karen Hales and Charlotte Mann, and Ida Lou Purifoy for all their love and care for Mrs. Smith.
