
Lois Cox Carter, 86, of Wilmington, NC, died Monday, May 16, 2011 at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove. She was born in Wilmington, NC, on April 8, 1925, the daughter of the late Mrs. Corine Cox Russ and the granddaughter of the late Mr. Jim and Lula Maude Cox. Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband, Retired Colonel, US Army, Woodus Allen Carter and brother, Mr. John Ingnatious Elmore, Jr. She was a graduate of New Hanover High School and attended Miller Motte School in the late forties. Mrs. Carter was a veteran of the US Navy Waves during WWII. She was the first employee of the Transportation Corps at Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point and began administration duties in the Old Fort Garrison Building at Fort Johnson, Southport, NC. She later became the Administration Technician to the Director of Support Services. She was the past president of the New Hanover County Sunset Park Home Makers Extension Club for several years, also a member of Letitia Rebekah Lodge No. 3, Independent Order of the Odd Fellows and an Honorary Life Member of the American Legion Post No. 10 of Wilmington, NC, and enjoyed many years organizing the children?s Christmas parties and Easter Egg hunts. She is a charter member of the Women?s Military Service of America Memorial Foundation in Washington, DC. Mrs. Carter was a member of Good Shepard Church for more than 60 years, serving on the Vestry and helping with bazaars. Surviving is her sister, Mrs. Ann Elmore McDowell Putnam; nieces Julia Ann Elmore Suggs and husband James, Kathy McDowell Bennett and husband Bob, all of Wilmington, NC, Gwendolyn Dianne Elmore Bass and husband Ralph of Whiteville, NC; nephews, John I. Elmore, III and wife Teresa, Johnnie McDowell and wife Elda, Roy Ricky McDowell and wife Elsie, all of Wilmington, NC; several cousins and two stepchildren, step-grandchildren and great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Mrs. Carter wishes to express her deepest appreciation to Dr. Janell Rhyne, Dr. Allison Lynn, Dr. Peter Ungaro, Dr. Vikki Brown, and all the doctors and nurses who cared for her during her illness. Also recognized are the many friends and neighbors who have been so helpful and shared their kindness, care and concern over the years.
