Margaret Elizabeth “Peggy” Barr went to be with the Lord on her 101st birthday, March 6, 2023. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 74 years, Alvin Barr, by her parents John T. and Margaret Crouch, a brother, John, sister-in-law Virginia Barr, and many dear friends and family. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Alan Hunsberger.
She was born and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She worked in retail sales and married her one true love in 1942. During World War II she worked to help the war effort as an inspector of ball peen hammers. Upon her husband’s return after being liberated from Germany, they moved to Newport News, Virginia where he was stationed and worked at NACA(NASA). They returned to Philadelphia, and she became a stay-at-home mother. They moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1961. In 1976 they moved to Wilmington, NC when her husband came to set up a circuit breaker plant for the company he worked for. They loved Wilmington and stayed after retirement. Peggy was always an active person and a woman of faith. She was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Daughters of St. John’s (Philadelphia), a member and leader of the Hope Circle of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church (Wilmington) and a 15-year leader of the prayer group. She was a volunteer reader for many years at the Grotchen Nursing Home, being put forth as a candidate for North Carolina Volunteer of the Year. She was a member of Pilot International, being inducted as their first professional homemaker. She was very active in the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, serving in many capacities, most frequently as Chaplain. She was very creative and artistic, loved design and decorating. Most of all, she lived her faith and was an example of a godly woman.
The family would like to thank Sue Strickland, Deanna DuVal-Grim, Dorothy Meyers and Angela Bruce as well as many others, including those at Trinity Grove Skilled Nursing, for their care and help over these past years. It meant a great deal to all of us.
Visitation will be held at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 612 South College Road, Wilmington, NC. on Saturday, March 11, 2023, from 11am, prior to the noon funeral service. Interment will follow at Oleander memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or to St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
