Marie grew up in the Holden Beach area where she graduated from Shallotte High School in 1951. She continued her education with an RN nursing degree from James Walker School of Nursing in 1955.
Marie Robinson McLamb was the third child of seven and the only daughter of Jesse C Robinson and Ruth R Robinson of Boones Neck Road.
She helped raise her younger brothers. When she finished high school Marie decided she wanted to go to nursing school.
With the help of her brothers Jack and Mack, she applied to and was accepted into the James Walker Memorial Hospital Nursing program. She graduated from the nursing program in 1955. While in the nursing program she met James Hiram McLamb. The summer after graduating nursing school she and James married.
In Sept of 1957 she became a mother of a little boy, whom she named James Hiram McLamb jr. The next year along came Joan Marie McLamb. Two years later Brenda Carol McLamb arrived. The last child to arrive two years after that was Patricia Ann McLamb.
As a young bride and mother Marie chose to work nights so that she could be home with her children during the early years. Throughout her nursing career she continued to either work nights or 3-11.
Marie was a woman of many talents that she shared with others. She loved to sew and make clothing for her daughters. She taught each of her children how to embroider, sew and crochet. She had a green thumb and loved to grow flowers. She loved music and purchased a piano. Later each of her children took piano lessons.
Throughout the years Marie’s passion for crocheting expanded into her making baby sweater sets, then baby blankets. She always had an extra baby blanket or two if someone needed one.
She made each member in her family afghan blankets, ponchos, scarves, hats, and lots of beautiful intricate doilies. Etc.
She was also involved with some of her nursing classmates in projects to crochet newborn baby hats for the hospital, and also hats for cancer patients.
When her grandchildren arrived, she loved sharing/teaching them her creative talents. She helped with after school care with Michael and David Kelly and Holly Hickman.
Marie also served her church as head deaconess and member of Dorcas Society of the local Seventh-Day Adventist Church as well as assisting her husband with the Pathfinder Club Youth Ministry.
