Marie Byrd Sanderson of Wilmington died Monday, February 23, 2015, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born in Duplin County, NC, to the late Preston L. Byrd and Mary Alice Whitley Byrd. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Horace T. Sanderson and four siblings, Alma Halecki, Earl Byrd, Margaret Jackson and Edward Byrd. Survivors include her children, Denise Benners and husband Bob and Kim Chewning and husband Ronnie all of Wilmington; grandchildren, Taylor Chewning and wife Beth of Raleigh, Ashley Benners of Chapel Hill and Amber Chewning of Charlotte; one sister, Eleanor B. Teater of Fayetteville and a special cousin, Mitchell Byrd and wife Janet of Raleigh. A funeral service will be held at 2pm, Thursday, February 26, 2015, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow at Devotional Gardens in Warsaw, NC.
