Nancy was born in Wilmington, NC and was a lifelong resident there except for a short time that her family lived in Whiteville when she was a child. She attended the neighborhood schools in Sunset Park before graduating from New Hanover High School in 1961. She then attended Wilmington College (now UNCW) and received her BA and M.Ed in elementary education. She taught for several New Hanover County Schools from 1965 to her retirement in 1998. Among them are E.A. Alderman, Tileston, Williston, and Emma B. Trask where she was awarded Teacher of the Year. Nancy was dedicated to teaching and helping as many people as she was able to during her lifetime. She did this through her teaching; her membership in Delta Kappa Gamma; her involvement in the Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary; her participation in the Grace Circle of Weslyan Chapel United Methodist Church; as well as being a founding member of Faith Community Church; and most importantly by modeling to her children how to treat others. Nancy’s love of Christmas kept her busy throughout the year collecting items to fill stockings for the Salvation Army to distribute. Even while being homebound, she was able to fill more than 150 stockings each year.
Her brightest days were those in which her house was filled with family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Dollie Nance Hendrix; her step-mother Luola Meares Hendrix; step-siblings Linda Walsh and Mitch Meares; and brother-in-law Wayne Hodges.
She is survived by the love of her life and husband of 61 years, James Hodges; her three children James Bryan Hodges (Debra) of Clayton, NC; Lisa Renee Cottle (Roy) of Willard, NC; David Kendall Hodges (Kelly) of Raleigh, NC; eight grandchildren Keri Powell (Jason), Joshua Greer(Amanda), Brandon Greer(Shai), Caitlin Hodges, Kimberly Hodges, Jacob Hodges, Bryce Hodges, Alex Hodges; Four great-grandchildren Knox Powell, Emmett Powell, Paxton Wenzel and Mugen Greer; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Linda Hinson who was more like a sister than a cousin, and a step sister, Kay Coleman (Milton) of Shallotte, NC. She is also survived by two sisters- in-law, Linda Hodges Pope (Hovie) and Pamela Watkins Hodges.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life on November 11, 2025 at Andrews Mortuary, Market Street, Wilmington, NC. Visitation will be at 11:00 am with the service at noon. There will be a graveside service immediately following the service at Oleander Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to be made to Faith Community Methodist Church, the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice.
