

Nancy Carol Campbell Monroe, 77, passed away peacefully at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, Tuesday evening with her husband, John, holding her hand and surrounded by her family. She was born in Hamlet NC and grew up in Lee County, near Sanford NC.
She is preceded in death by her father, Edgar Lynn Campbell, and her mother, Mary Lou Conder Campbell, and grandson, William Stewart Monroe.
She is survived by her devoted and loving husband John S. Monroe Jr., daughter Cindy Koonce, son in law Alexander Koonce, son Alexander Stewart “Sandy” Monroe and daughter in law Clara Brown Monroe of Wilmington NC, brother Henry Jacob Campbell and sister in law Margie Campbell of Conway NC, brother Edgar Franklin Campbell and sister in law Karen Campbell, of Lakeland Florida, sister Jamie Williams and brother in law Dr. William K. Williams of Lancaster SC, brother in law Dr. William M. Monroe and sister in law Blanche Kammer Monroe of Bath NC. Dearly beloved grandchildren include Katherine Stewart Yow, Mary Bellamy Monroe Koonce, and Campbell Stewart Monroe. Nancy had four nieces and three nephews.
Nancy graduated from Sanford Central High School in 1957 and was Valedictorian of her class. She attended Meredith College in Raleigh NC and graduated with Honors in Math in 1961. This June 24th will mark the 55th anniversary of Nancy’s marriage to, John, her high school sweetheart. Nancy and John were always together and were an amazing couple - playing tennis, golf, gardening, remodeling, working in churches, and being community leaders in the eleven various communities where they lived. Nancy taught school in nine school systems in over 32 years. She was highly respected and admired by her teaching associates as well as her math students. Nancy also served as a Stephen Minister at one of the eleven Presbyterian Churches that she and John belonged. As President of the Forum Class at First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, Nancy welcomed everyone and always with a smile.
Nancy lived for and was strongly devoted to her husband, her children and her grandchildren and she was always dedicated to her church. God gifted Nancy with numerous talents and skills. She enjoyed cooking as well as playing the piano for her family, and especially playing “Morning Has Broken “ and favorite Christmas Carols. Nancy was kind, loving and compassionate to her family and friends.
Nancy liked to travel, read, play Bridge on her iPad, Christmas shopping in New York, and attending her grandchildren’s many activities and events. A favorite enjoyment for Nancy and John was working together in their beautiful yards.
Nancy dearly loved her P.E.O. sisters and served her club as its Historian in recent years. She gave very timely, inspirational, and compelling devotions. She took all of her life assignments very seriously.
Everyone remembers Nancy for having a radiant smile and a cheerful disposition. Even with her serious illness, she always greeted her caregivers with a warm and friendly smile. Her cheerful attitude and deep faith have always been an inspiration and source of encouragement to her entire family and others close to her.
Family will receive friends at Andrews Mortuary & Crematory on Friday, June 10, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 1617 Market Street, Wilmington NC 28401. 910-762-7788. The Service of Witness to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and In Celebration of the Life of Nancy Carol Campbell Monroe will be held on June 11, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington NC, 125 South Third Street, Wilmington NC 28401. A reception in Gilmour Hall will follow immediately after the church service. After the reception, there will be a brief graveside service at Oleander Memorial Gardens 306 Bradley Drive Wilmington NC 28409.
