Bob was born on August 19, 1937 in Goldsboro, NC. He grew up in Wilmington, NC and graduated from New Hanover High School in 1955. After attending Wingate Junior College from 1955-57, he signed with the Cleveland Indians organizations, playing minor league baseball in New York and Nebraska. Baseball was a passion of Bob’s his entire life, second only to his love for his family and church. He later returned to East Carolina University where he earned a BS in Education as well as MS School Administration. Bob taught at Bradley Creek Elementary as well as Tileston Junior High School where he also coached baseball, basketball and football. He then went on to be principal at Noble Middle School, New Hanover High School (NHHS) and Myrtle Grove Middle School. Bob spent the majority of his tenure at NHHS, serving as principal from 1977-1992. Even after retiring, Bob took pride in wearing his Wildcat orange and black. He loved attending Hanover sporting events and few things were better than spending a Friday night at Legion Stadium cheering for his Wildcats. As a principal Bob was a dedicated leader in every sense of the word, he had a strong presence and heart that embraced every student and staff member. It brought him great joy when he would run into former students and he was always happy to stop and talk.
Bob was a long-time member of Temple Baptist Church. For close to 70 years, he took pride in being known as the “go to” person for any questions or problems that arose during the weekly, monthly, or yearly operations of the church. He served multiple times as a Deacon, including Deacon Chair numerous times. He served on various committees, taught Sunday school and was President of the Temple Brotherhood for over 20 years. In 2022, he was recognized as Deacon Emeritus for his lifelong dedication to his Savior and Temple Baptist Church.
He was also awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for his exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments to the state of North Carolina.
Bob was a wonderfully kind and compassionate person and had a tremendous impact on the lives of those around him. He carried himself with dignity, strength and was full of love for everyone he encountered. He will be greatly missed.
