Robert Lawton (Bobby) Cox, 64, of Burgaw, went peacefully home to live with the Lord on Saturday, November 12, 2022. Bobby is survived by Claudia, his loving wife of 34 years, his son, Brian, his daughter, Charity (Collin) as well as seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, his sister, Becky (Donnie), brother, Bubba (Joyce) and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Born locally on June 16,1958, Bobby was the son of Floyd W. Cox and Viola E. Cox of Wrightsville Beach. From the time he was old enough to hold a fishing rod he could be found on the pier. His grandfather built Crystal Pier and Bobby often spoke of the many happy memories he had fishing with friends and family off of that pier. In more recent years he could be found reeling in a big one with his buddies on Johnny Mercers.
He would often reminisce of his teenage years just hanging out with friends listening to the great tunes on the jukebox at Lumina (Ballroom). He captured those memories by making a ten volume set of CD’s recreating the songs from the Lumina jukebox and sharing them with family and friends.
He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1976. Very recently he attended his 46th High School reunion and really enjoyed reconnecting and catching up with old friends.
In 1988 he married the love of his life, Claudia and settled into family life. They built a home in Burgaw and raised their family there.
He studied at Mt Olive College as well as Miller Motte College and earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science. He went on to build a 29 year career as a Help Desk Analyst at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Bobby loved muscle cars. In 1977 he bought a Pontiac Can Am which he proudly owned until 2005. A few years later he moved on to a Carolina blue Ford Mustang. He was an avid Carolina basketball fan and loved to wear (and drive) his team colors. He never missed a game.
Along with his brother and sister, Bobby was also musically inclined. At holidays and other gatherings they would all bring their guitars and play and sing for the entire family. A favorite memory of his wife, Claudia , is how he would play and sing the song Nights in White Satin to her during their courtship. Up until his departure, he would go every Friday night to weekly jam sessions at the home of his brother, Bubba.
His grandchildren and great grandchildren loved their Paw Paw and took turns spending their weekends with him and Claudia in Burgaw.
Bobby was so very loved by his family and friends and left us much too soon, but as a devout Christian and good and faithful servant of the Lord has now gone home to to spend eternity in the Kingdom of Heaven where his family will, one day, be reunited with him. Until then, he will be truly missed and fondly remembered.
Flowers can be sent to Pine Valley Church of Christ at 3601 College Road where funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 20 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The American Parkinson’s Disease Association or any charity of your choosing.
