

He was born on December 12, 1932 in Nashville, TN, the son of the late Samuel Bernard Thompson, Sr. and Mattye Smalling Thompson.
Samuel attended Duke University before serving in the US Army as a medic. Following his honorable discharge, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Memphis State University. He worked for IBM for thirty-five years, retiring as a location manager. Mr. Thompson was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He spent twelve years with the Wrightsville Beach Coast Guard Auxiliary, was a Hospice Volunteer, a Mason, and was a member of Gideons International.
Surviving is his loving wife of sixty-five years, Peggy Holloway Thompson; his daughter, Lisa Thompson Caudill and husband Bobby of Fairfield, OH; his son, Bryan Edward Thompson and wife Diane of Mount Pleasant, NC; five grandchildren, Ashley, Laura and Amanda Thompson, and Erin and Nicholas Sheppard; one brother, Lowery Thompson; one sister, Norma Harper; many nieces and nephews, including Bruce Hall, David Holloway, Tom Holloway and Kirk Holloway; and a sister-in-law, Grace Holloway Proctor.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice or Gideons International.
