"Ginny” was the third oldest of eight children. Her siblings were her bunkmates, roommates, playmates, and her best friends. Her family was diverse, and as the oldest daughter she was very proud of her brothers and sisters. Throughout her young life she attended Catholic schools, which helped shape her strong faith that evolved and endured throughout her lifetime. As a young child she took dance lessons after school, and by her teenage years she was an accomplished dancer. She most especially loved dancing alongside her siblings as they performed in many recitals together. Following graduation from Catherine McAuley High School in Flatbush, New York, she went on to nursing school to fulfill her life’s calling. While she was a nursing student she lost her beloved father, a defining event in her life. She strived to emulate his kind and gentle spirit during the rest of her lifetime. Following her graduation from nursing school she worked in the intensive care unit, providing critical care for the sickest patients. During that time she met her first husband, Eduardo Zloczover, who was doing his residency in pediatrics. They fell fiercely in love and married in New York in 1971. Ginny embraced the culture of Eddy’s native country of Peru and incorporated his Jewish faith tradition into her own life.
They welcomed their daughter Rachel in 1972 followed by their son Michael in 1975. They moved their young family to South Florida in 1976 to open Eddy’s pediatric practice. Ginny served not only as head nurse, but also as administrator, accountant, front desk staff, and human resource manager for the practice. As a team they were entirely dedicated to providing the best care for the children of Delray Beach, Florida. They welcomed all who showed up in their office, regardless of ability to pay. All the while Ginny attended her own children’s school events, cheered them on in the classroom and on the sporting fields, and honed her tennis game to become a formidable force on the court. As Eddy’s health suffered complications due to Type I Diabetes, Ginny assumed the role of his caregiver which she performed with dedication and steadfast love until his death in 1999. When Eddy could no longer practice medicine, Ginny began her work as a home health nurse. She worked for Community Home Health for over twenty years, ultimately becoming a head administrator responsible for great growth and success of the company.
In 2006 Ginny met her second love, John Van Vorst. John restored joy and light to Ginny’s life. They were married in a surprise ceremony during her sixtieth birthday celebration in 2009. Their years together were highlighted by a shared love of the beach, movies, great meals, and travel. They moved together to Wilmington, North Carolina in 2022 and in recent years they enjoyed just sitting together side by side holding hands. Shortly after meeting John, Ginny became a grandmother, assuming the role that would be by far her most favorite. “Mimi” loved each of her grandchildren as if they were her only one. She cherished every moment with each of them. She attended as many school and sports events as she was able, shuttling between Florida and North Carolina to do so. She missed no opportunity to share her wisdom with her grandchildren, always dispensing the best advice and encouraging them to be their best selves. She cooked with them, listened to their trials, laughed with them, and cried with them.
They were truly her pride and joy. Throughout her life, Ginny cared for others. It was her best gift and her life’s work. She maintained strong decades-long friendships, with many considering her to be their best friend. She had incredible work ethic and mentored many during her career. She faced challenges and difficulty bravely and without complaint. She was enormously grateful for all with which she was blessed and most especially for her friends and family.
She is survived by her husband John Van Vorst, daughter Rachel Jones (husband Robert), son Michael Zloczover, step-sons David Van Vorst and Patrick Van Vorst (wife Melissa), grandchildren Eloise and Virginia Jones, Amelia and Jacob Zloczover, Violet Van Vorst, and Viara Van Vorst, brother Thomas Wollack, sister Christine Avin, sister Maryanne Dabrowski (husband Stanley), brother Charles Wollack, brother-in-laws Ricardo Zloczover and Gerardo Zloczover (wife Sheila), sister-in-law Manusca Zloczover, as well as many, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews – all of whom she loved very much.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1pm on Friday May 1, 2026 at First Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, North Carolina.
